Separation of Church and Statecreated 11/24/2009 - 9:17 am by Chris |
I just read a book a few weeks ago called A Christian Manifesto by Francis Schaeffer. It sounds more harsh than it actually is. It deals primarily with a Christian's role in society and politics and how the decline of a traditional Christian world-view and the rise of the humanistic world-view has affected things. It was written a while back but is incredibly pertinent to today.
One of the things I wanted to brush up on since reading that is where the idea of "separation of church and state" came from. As it turns out, there is no law. The first amendment states that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." It was a supreme court ruling, and not until 1947, that first introduced it.
I found good information at http://www.christiananswers.net/q-wall/wal-g004.html regarding the history. Give it a read.
